“If we are what we eat… Well, I am awfully sweet.” anon.

Life is too short to not enjoy a good dessert! They are our comforts, some of our best memories and downright delicious. There are so many sweet treats to enjoy that it is even hard to compile a list; although I have tried. Over the years, I have tried my fair share of desserts and while there are a variety of decadent, there are some that I keep coming back to to satisfy my sweet tooth.

Red Velvet

Red velvet cake is absolutely one of my favorites. It may because of the rich flavorful layers to the addicting cream cheese frosting in between. When they come together, it’s magical.

Flan

There’s sophistication in simplicity, even with desserts. Flan is such a simple dessert, but not easily made. One little slip up and you end up with pudding instead of a delectable treat. It can be paired with fruits and goes well with a warm glass of milk. My favorite part is the thin layer of caramel on top, either liquid or in a chip.

Dutch Apple Pie

Perfect for the season, the Dutch apple pie is truly a southern favorite. Spiced apples covered in a delicious filling, with doughy bites in between, held together in a yummy crust. Top it with some vanilla ice cream and whip cream and, oh! What a treat!

Pavlova

Pavlova is one my favorite latest dessert and I’ve been having a blast trying out different recipes. I became hooked on this sweet delight after an evening at M on the Bund in Shanghai, China. The dessert was layered with whip cream and a layer of fruit that was just fantastic. Although, light and airy it is quite filling and goes well with a cup of coffee.

Dark Chocolate Truffles

Who doesn’t love chocolate!? I can hurt myself on homemade chocolate truffles. Dark chocolate has a richer cocoa taste and better yet, less calories. When baking, I try to stick with brands I trust such as Nestle, Ghirardelli and Baker’s. Of course, it is still a dessert, so try not to eat too many.

Gingerbread, especially Gingerbread Cake

Gingerbread is a deliciously spiced treat. Surprisingly, ginger isn’t the main ingredient among the spices used, although the flavor and aroma comes through strongly. As cookies, they are great for the holiday season. If you want to upgrade your gingerbread, try your hand at creating a gingerbread cake. The spices in these cookies and cake pair well with a warm chai tea latte.

Parfait

A parfait offers a lighter dessert that still has a touch of sweetness. Take your favorite yoghurt and layer it between seasonal fruits. Add a dollop of whip cream on the top to sweeten the treat. My go-to when creating my parfait is classic vanilla yogurt with strawberries and blueberries.
