It’s now the New Year! Officially! In China, it’s celebrated shortly over a month later and through Spring Festival. It is THE occasion of the year! While living abroad in China, I experienced Lunar New Year firsthand in Shanghai, China.

As I sit back waiting for fall to get into full swing, I am reminded about this time a few years ago I was preparing for my first move abroad. My first move ever. It was a crazy time! The whole time rushed past me in a blur. There were documents, luggage, and my mind was trying to process more than it could handle. You never know what quite to expect when moving abroad, just that you should probably expect everything.

The climb is exciting and at the same time terrifying. It’s amazing being so high up, watching the landscape change before your eyes. Still, can’t help the sudden drop of the heart; especially when the car disappears into the clouds. It’s like you’re just floating, but its eerie moving and not seeing anything. One of the members in the group likened the experience to Stephen King’s The Mist—way to increase the terror and suspense.

The next major item on our tour was the well-known Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge. Another wonder, this glass bridge is not only the longest, but tallest suspended glass bridge in the world. This incredible architectural feat started a trend of glass bridge construction throughout China resulting in many “glass bridge” locations.

On your tour of China, Zhangjiajie is not a place to be missed. Fondly referred to as a small city but of big wonders, Zhangjiajie does not disappoint visitors and locals alike. A UNESCO world heritage location and home to many natural wonders, Zhangjiajie is well-known for much of its captivating landscape. With towering rock pillars, architectural feats, and lush canyons, this small city tucked away in China’s Hunan province has many sights that will leave you in awe.

There were many things I needed to get accustomed to after my initial culture shock and lifestyle 180. During my time abroad, there were many things I recognized as home comforts that turned out to luxuries in Shanghai.

One thing to not fall short on is self-care and by doing it up with a bit of luxury you’re in for superb treat. We already have a routine (if not, you should definitely write one) and know that self-care goes a long way for mental and physical health. At certain times, we can benefit from boosting our self-care regimens.

My time was winding down in Shanghai, China for the moment. However, I still had so much to do and so much to see! One of the things at the top of my to-do list was Beijing. I could not say that I have lived in China for almost two years and had not been to Beijing—had not gone to the Great Wall!

Shanghai is easily recognized by its iconic skyline that curves around the Huangpu River. The surrounding area, the Bund, is lined with attractions, from jazz clubs and theaters to quaint cafes and fine dining, including M on the Bund.
